Egyptian locust (Anacridium aegyptium)

The Egyptian locust is a solitary insect of the family Acididae, the grasshoppers.,

They can be found in a wide area, including most of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

This was a big one with a body length of about 7 cm, so probably a female. It was just basking in the sunshine on the main path through the village of Etia.

Although called the Egyptian Locust, it’s not the one that caused the biblical plague. That’s the Desert Locust (Schistocerca gregaria).
